Politics of Discretion by: Termeh

From a group show called
" The Violent Task of Creativity "
at the Intersection For The Arts
San Francisco, 1999. The piece
consists of three 20”X3”X3” boxes.
Each box has a key hole in front,
through which one can see the
installations inside.
.

" I grew up in Iran,
where from an early age,
I learned to watch what
I say, to whom I say it
and when; and to always
read between the lines.

Throughout the turbulent
history of Iran, writers,
intellectuals, and those
who dared to speak up
against oppression, or
for their basic human
rights, or dared to even
suggest reform, have
been threatened, jailed,
tortured, exiled, or killed.

.

The result is a culture
which honors general
distrust, slyness, and
silent endurance against
all odds as its basic code
of survival.

In Iran truth can only be
spoken through layers of
suggestive innuendoes,
metaphors, and satire.
This becomes an integral
part of one’s sense of
expression.

.

Although I find the
complexity of this form of
expression exciting and
perpetually fascinating, it
also compels me to
question its implications
on a personal, as well as
socio-political, level."
