" I grew up in Iran, where from an early age, I learned to watch what I say, to whom I say it and when; and to always read between the lines. Throughout the turbulent history of Iran, writers, intellectuals, and those who dared to speak up against oppression, or for their basic human rights, or dared to even suggest reform, have been threatened, jailed, tortured, exiled, or killed. |

The result is a culture which honors general distrust, slyness, and silent endurance against all odds as its basic code of survival. In Iran truth can only be spoken through layers of suggestive innuendoes, metaphors, and satire. This becomes an integral part of one’s sense of expression. |
